░▒▓ Virus Scanning Help ▓▒░
To move through this help file, use the Page Up and Page Down
keys, as well as the up and down arrow keys. Press ESC to exit.
To use the scanner: From the main menu, select a drive letter,
"Help", or "Quit" in the gray window, by using the cursor keys
to highlight your choice, and the ENTER key to select that
option.
If your machine only has one floppy disk drive, that drive is
"A:". If you are uncertain of what drive the disk you are
using is in, please ask your support personnel. If you do not
have a floppy disk to scan, select QUIT, and the scanner will
exit.
Be aware that upon entering the virus scanner, the computer's
memory was scanned. Basically, this means your machine is
clear from viruses when you go to check your disks.
Computer Viruses are usually spread from floppy disks to
uninfected computers, which from then on can infect other
disks which are used in the now infected machine. What this
means is, if you don't scan your disks regularly, you are
risking YOUR data, as well as the integrity of the machine you
are using.
A good rule of thumb is scan every disk you want to use in a
machine once per session; that is, if you use the same disk in
the same machine, and you can guarantee no one else has used
that computer since you last did, you can be pretty certain
there aren't any new viruses lurking about in the system. If
you aren't sure, it never hurts to scan your disks, as an
infected disk may mean lost work.
If you find a virus on a disk, this scanner will automatically
attempt to remove the infection and save your data. If the
scanner is NOT able to remove a discovered virus, you will be
notified, and you should contact your support personnel.
If you find a virus on ANY of your floppy disks, even if it
was a removable virus, PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO SCAN ALL OF THE
DISKS YOU HAVE USED RECENTLY.... You're probably spreading
viruses otherwise.
░▒▓ About the Scanner ▓▒░
This virus scanner interface was written by Mark Hazen, of the
College of Family and Consumer Sciences, at the University of
Georgia. If you have comments or suggestions, please mail them
to: mhazen@fcs.uga.edu
This is revision 2.04 of this software.
This scanner uses F-Prot as its scanning engine. Upon finding
a virus, the software notifies your network supervisors that a
virus was found, and whether or not it was removable. If your
support staff feels your virus problem justifies a followup
call or letter, you will be notified as soon as someone can
attend to your problem.
